Tendulkar was on the verge of realizing his dream in 2003, ahead of Australia, who broke in South Africa in the final.
"I still want to do something and everyone knows what it is," he said in view of the third World Cup in the subcontinent.
Tendulkar teammates are also eager for the World Cup. Their refrain is that they must do for the maestro of 37 years, their hero. With them, hoping one billion people from their waiting 28 years for the World Cup for the second time before finishing now.
Indians realize that hope alone can not provide the final victory. Clubs Cup contenders with South Africa and England, two-time champions West Indies, Bangladesh, Ireland and Holland, the main challenge to world No. 2 ODI team is to absorb the pressure of playing before the home crowd.
In order to compound their problems, the Indians play in the opening match of the tournament Feb. 19 against Bangladesh and also in their backyard, Dhaka.
It 'was a shocking defeat at the hands of Bangladesh in the heat of India that literally threw the last World Cup in the Caribbean. Sri Lanka, the third team in the group, then went into the final.
Although the Indians are trying to live down the memory tag and other favorites, contenders to see them on the team might need to win the Cup.
