Amarnath Sees Chink in India's Spin Armour

Amarnath, now 60, was one of the architects of India only 50 of the World Cup triumph in 1983 and won the Man of the Match Award in two semi-finals and final to deny Clive Lloyd's West Indies As a hat-trick.

India selectors opted for off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and leg-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and Piyush Chawla a final team of 15 men February 19 to April 2 tournament.

Although Amarnath, and large, welcomed the team, felt his left arm spinner Pragyan Ojha inclusion would have added variety.

"I think it's a good team, a good team all along, they have chosen," Amarnath told Reuters in an interview.

"Probably, they had the option of adding a left-arm spinner on the side."

"I still think that a left-arm spinner can play a very important role, especially when playing in a country like India."

"You probably feel Yuvraj (Singh) can do the job."

With Virender Sehwag, Suresh Raina and Yusuf Pathan offer part-time options, Amarnath felt India were too far out of the spinners on their side.

"The overseas players are good players in the spin-off, instead of left-arm spin, especially on Indian wickets where the ball starts to turn," he said.
