IPL 5 Auction: IPL 5 144 Players Finalised List

As many as 144 players, including Indian Test batsman VVS Laxman, paceman S Sreesanth and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, will go under the hammer when the players auction for the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is held in Bangalore on February 4.

RP singh, Parthiv Patel, Ramesh Powar, R Vinay Kumar and VRV Singh will be the other Indian players who will be up for grabs at the ITC Royal Gardenia.

Brad Hogg, Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle, Usman Khawaja, Luke Ronchi are among the 16 players from Australia who will be up for sale.

From England, 13 cricketers, including James Anderson, Ian Bell, Owais Shah, Ravi Bopara, Graeme Swann and Chris Tremlett will be up for grabs.

South Africa and New Zealand will have 19 and 10 players respectively, while dashing opener Tamim Iqbal will be the lone cricketer from Bangladesh to go under the hammer.

Sri Lanka will have as many as 18 cricketers, while West Indies and Zimbabwe will have 16 and seven players respectively in the auction list.

Tom Cooper, who played 18 ODIs will be the sole player from Holland, while O'Brien brothers - Niall and Kevin - from Ireland will also be up for auction.

"The shortlist comprises some outstanding cricket talent. Given that it was prepared on the basis of the feedback of the franchises themselves, the stage is set for an exciting and eventful player auction, this Saturday," IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla said in a statement.

"The Franchises purchased the bulk of their respective squads in 2011. Their aim at the upcoming auction will be to bring in some players who can make a difference to their prospects in the tournament. The auction will mark the formal opening of IPL 2012," Shukla added.

Besides Johan van der Wath, who played 10 ODIs and eight T20s, as many as 10 uncapped cricketers from South Africa will also be up for sale.

All-rounder Sachithra Senanayake from Sri Lanka and three other uncapped players from the West Indies will also be in the list.

Despite the growing consensus over Ahmedabad deserving an Indian Premier League (IPL) team, there seems to be no indication for now that the BCCI will facilitate any such move.

The IPL governing council's newly-elected members met in Hyderabad on Friday to discuss the issue surrounding the termination of Kochi IPL and also finalized the dates for the fifth edition of the tournament to be played in 2012.

IPL Auction Set for February 4

The player auction for the 2012 IPL will be held on February 4, the governing council has announced. The players from the Kochi Tuskers Kerala franchise, which was terminated earlier this year, will be part of the auction. The venue is yet to be announced.

The council had earlier confirmed that the squad sizes for each team have been increased from 30 to 33, with eleven foreign players per squad, up one from the previous limit of 10. However, the number of foreign players that can be part of the final XI will remain at four. The teams will have an additional salary cap of $2 million.

Should any of the Kochi players fail to attract the bid, their salaries will be covered by the IPL through the franchise's bank guarantee worth Rs 156 crores that has been encashed by the BCCI. Among the leading players that will be part of the auction are Muttiah Muralitharan, Brendon McCullum, Mahela Jayawardene and Ravindra Jadeja.

The governing council also decided that the first window for trading players will be between December 15 and January 20, with a shorter window after the auction. There is no financial cap on trading, though each franchise can add only a maximum of four players to their squad through trading.

IPL 2012 Dates Announced by BCCI

The fifth edition of the Indian Premier League organized by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be held from April 4, 2012 to May 27, 2012 in hot summer of Indian subcontinent. The IPL 2012 will feature 74 matches, same as in 2011 Indian Premier League. The tournament will be held after Indian team returns back from Australia tour where they will play 5 Test, 2 T20 International and a Tri Series against Australia and Sri Lanka.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has given unofficial window to IPL for the next 10 years in their Future Tour Programs (FTP). Indian team is not expected to play any series in the months of April and May. In the Indian Premier League 2011, international players from Australia, West Indies and Pakistan may miss the tournament partially due to overlapping series at the same time. England will host West Indies, Australia is schedule to host West Indies and Pakistan will tour Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in the same period.

The 2011 IPL, played in India took place within a week of World Cup Final match played at Mumbai where India emerged as victorious. In the same event, total number of teams increased to ten after Sahara Pune Warriors and Kochi Tuskers Kerala won the bids for two new teams.

While announcing the closing and opening dates for DLF IPL 2012, Chirayu Amin Chairman of Indian Premier League said, “We have no doubt that the fifth season of IPL will be as, if not more, eventful and exciting than the previous ones.”
